learning the BSPTS rigo Concept
As a physical therapist you can become certified to train patients in the scoliosis specific exercises from the BSPTS school.
A prerequisite to the 3 Leveled courses is the Basic Course. The Basic Course is for all medical professionals. This course can be taken online; see www.BSPTS.net
Three leveled courses are for physical therapists only. Completion of all 3 are required for BSPTS Certification:
Level 1, 2 and 3 are 48 CEU hours. Each level has its own requirements to advance to the next level. Details on all levels are on the Schroth-Barcelona Institute website (www.schroth-barcelonainstitute.com).
L1 Objectives:
Certification Level 2 (C2) - 45 hours
This course will be taught through 2023 for those who took C1 prior to 2020 and are within two years of the date of the C2 course being offered. C1 will not be offered in 2020. C2 and C1 is being phased out as the New Education Plan is being introduced in 2020.
C2 Objectives:

- Understand multidisciplinary approach to conservative management of scoliosis
- Perform an individualized scoliosis patient clinical evaluation
- Understand radiological variables in scoliosis assessment and classification
- Identify scoliosis patients appropriate for conservative management
- Develop specific treatment plans and goals based on the patient presentation
- Treat patients with basic 3-D principles of correction according to BSPTS
- Treat in 5 basic starting positions (supine, prone, side-lying, sitting and standing)
- Teach joint protection and proper ADL principles for patients with scoliosis
Certification Level 2 (C2) - 45 hours
This course will be taught through 2023 for those who took C1 prior to 2020 and are within two years of the date of the C2 course being offered. C1 will not be offered in 2020. C2 and C1 is being phased out as the New Education Plan is being introduced in 2020.
C2 Objectives:
- Understand multidisciplinary approach to conservative management of scoliosis
- Will apply recent SOSORT information and scoliosis literature to the clinical setting
- Improve competency in patient evaluation and curve classification (clinical and radiological)
- Develop specific treatment plans and goals based on the patient presentation
- Understand the different way to apply Schroth principles according to age and patient condition: juveniles, adolescents, adults, and adults with painful degenerative scoliosis and post surgical
- Implementation of group exercise and “intensive” programs
- Improve hands-on patient care skills with basic 3-D principles of correction according to Schroth Principles
- Successfully apply advanced exercises, facilitation techniques and stabilization
- Understanding 3D type bracing application and the physical therapy role in supporting brace management
